Headlands Artist in Residence 2000
Camouflaged Garden, 2006
16” x 20”, digital pigment print

New York visual artist Polly Apfelbaum was the first national artist to receive the Richard C. Diebenkorn Teaching Fellowship, an honor awarded by the San Francisco Art Institute that includes a cash award, teaching two courses at SFAI and a residency at Headlands Center for the Arts. Apfelbaum creates site-specific installations -- a hybrid of painting and sculpture -- incorporating abstract shapes and fabrics hand-dyed in rich, earthen pigments. She has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington, DC. Apfelbaum is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Grant and the Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize.
