Hiking Stick by Chris Deam

“When asked to design an object for the Headlands, I wanted something that would connect people to the unique landscape, natural beauty, and big nightsky here, so I was thinking about the hikes over these lands led by artists .  Simultaneously I had injured my knee and was frustrated with the institutional aesthetic of the cane I was using.  I decided to connect the dots and design a hiking stick with an integrated light.  The form was generated to both improve the ergonomics of the grip and to angle the light beam forward of the cane, thus preventing tripping over the dog.”

DETAILS

Small - below 5’6”,  Medium - 5’6”-5’11”, Large - above 5’11”

Requires 2 AAA batteries, unscrew switch housing on top of handgrip to change.

Maintain walking stick with lemon oil or furniture polish as required.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Chris is an interdisciplinary designer and architect who has developed a refined yet powerful vision over an expanding plateau of innovative projects. His work builds upon the aesthetic standards and exquisite restraint of previous modern masters and represents the core values of a designer who believes in design that is direct, honest and unadorned. Deam's quest to make his design "essential" is characterized by the reduction of design elements, gracefully revealing an enduring beauty that rests in the utility of design.
